Sewage Update!

The cleaning of the drenaje continues, in an effort to clear the lines before the rainy season, the H. Ayuntamiento of La Huerta in collaboration with the local Proteccion Civil Volunteer Members of La Manzanilla are revising the entire drainage system.

By clearing and dredging the lines we can prevent black waters to make it to our streets, lagoon and ocean.

La Manzanilla de Luto - Descanza en Paz Tony

This week has been a tough one, the town is sadden with the lost of a loving father and husband, a young beautiful soul, a gracious man who would always greet you with a smile, Antonio Alvarez "Tony" will be missed by all of us in La Manzanilla. A fatal motorcycle accident took his life after leaving from work.

May all of our thoughts and prayers be with Tony and his family, his wife Dania and his three daughters, for the next nine days following his death everyone is invited to join in the Novenario outside of his house while his spirit finds his way to heaven.

Coronas de Flores en memoria de Tony.

I still can't believe I will never see my cousin Tony again.

Special Thanks to the Loza Family, our thoughts are with you.

Feliz Dia de la Bandera - Celebrating Mexican Flag Day

When you are walking around  town this coming weekend take a moment to stop and admire what is considered one of the most beautiful flags in the world!

On Feb. 24 of 1821 the official Mexican flag design was adopted following Mexican Independence from the Spanish. In 1937 Presidente Lazaro Cardenas declared 24 de Febrero Dia Nacional de la Bandera.

The Mexican flag is composed by three distinct colors: Verde symbolizes the hope of the people in the future of their race, Blanco represents the purity in the ideals of the people and Rojo symbolizes the blood that was shed by our nations heroes. In the center of the flag you can observe the shield of the ancient city of Tenochtitlan, now called Mexico City.

The meaning of this shield lye's in the ancient legend of the Aztecs, who were living unsuspectingly in Aztlan when their principal warrior God Huitzilopochtli spoke to their priests and told them they must abandon their home in search for a new land that shall bring them power and riches, where a new people were to be born; and that they shall look for an Aguila posing on a Nopal devouring a serpent for this would be a sign that they had reached the promised land.  After about 300 years of searching they finally encountered the sign they had been looking for in the middle of a lake, they built the city of Tenochtitlan; that very moment is considered the founding of Mexico, and because of it's importance the shield is included in the flag.
The eagle represents the cosmic force of the Sun, the cactus is Mexico's landscape and the serpent represents the potentiality of the land.

This day is usually celebrated at local schools and plazas, or where ever there might be a flag to be raised!

Viva Mexico!

Feliz Dia de los Enamorados!

Happy Valentines Day!

There is love in the air this week and if you happen to be  in La Manzanilla and want to be alone with that special person here is a list of the most romantic spots around town were the locals go to profess their love to one another!!

  • "El Jardinsito": this is one of the favorite places for older couples and families in town to watch the sunset, it right across the main square and you can have a quick glimpse of the disappearing sun if your just in downtown.
  • "La Morronquera": this is what people call the rocky stretch along the cerro in the left side of the beach, there is a local joke where they say that this is were most of the La Manzanilla kids were conceived back in the day! Very romantic spot for a different view of the town and beach.
  • "La Manzanillita": this is a great escape for a romantic day trip, you can take a boat and get dropped off or kayak here and hang in your own private beach.
  • "Los Miradores": there are a series of "miradores" along the beach with a couple benches on them, pick your own and sit to admire your surroundings or your partner!
  • "La Cueva": take a nice long walk to Boca de Iguanas were you can find a small cave on the side of a rock, local couples come here to leave an offering to the Virgen and share a kiss in the privacy of the small cueva
  • "La Cruz": if you enjoy hiking with your partner this is a good walk to the top of the ridge were the dust road (street between Kinder and Primaria) leads you up to the cross that watches over our town. The view here is spectacular!
  • "Las Joyas": if what you want is more of a jungle hike then make the excursion up the river and enjoy swimming in the pools in a very amazing setting filled with exotic plants and wildlife.

La Manzanilla Rodeo History - Fiestas Taurinas 2012.

Fiesta, fiesta, fiesta!!! Los Toros have started!

You probably have noticed all the hype in town preparing for this weekend. This happens year after year around the same dates but do we even know why we enjoy this Fiesta so much, or why we even celebrate it in the first place? Here is some La Manzanilla history to help you prepare for the PARTY!

This tradition started in when the town celebrated the definitive possession of the Ejido Land on February 6, 1938. However the first localization and delimitation of the Ejido La Manzanilla land happened from the 4th to the 11th of August 1937 by the Engenier Rafael Rincon Fregoso and then made oficial by General Lazaro Cardenas del Rio, el Presidente de la Republica Mexicana at that time (this is why the main avenue coming in to town is named after him).

"El Toro"

The activities during the fiestas usually are the same every year. Beginning the night before you dance through the streets of the town following "La Farola" and the live band as well as indulging in the free fruit punch that will surely get you loose and in to the mood for the Fiestas! Next is "El Recibimiento" where whom ever is sponsoring that day feeds the town at the Casino Ejidal. Each person get's a plate of food, a refresco and cervezas... muchas cervezas! The live band plays music while everyone shows off their botas and sombreros. After everyone is done eating people set off for the "Jaripeo" which is the rodeo that will take place in the towns "Plaza de Toros" with Bull riding and much more music for people to dance to for hours.

The first day of the Fiestas is usually Gringo Day, when the towns community of  foreigners come together to sponsor one more day of Fiestas. Gringo Day Tradition started February 5 of 1982 organized by David Godin, Joe Hostetler and the late Steven Rutherford (descance en paz).

Los tres primeros Gringos :)

Birria has always been the food of choice in most recibimientos, but only on very few occasions was there anything different served. On the first Gringo Day ever they served roasted ducks and chickens and one time even some Dorado was grilled!
The official true La Manzanilla Birria recipe was provided by Don Jose Murillo Cambero "Moro", this same recipe is used today with the addition of few extra vegetables.

Last but definitely not least is the late night Baile, featuring more live Banda music and everyone in town sporting their best outfits for the Fiestas.

So bust out your cowboy boots and dance till you drop now that you know what your partying for!

Dia de la Candelaria - New Basura Solutions

They day has come to claim your Tamales!!! Feb 2nd is Dia de La Candelaria (Candle Mass Day), this is when the person who found the hidden baby Jesus in the "Rosca de Reyes" has to host a Tamale party and invite those with whom he shared the Rosca.

If you want to celebrate this day in an easier way just swing by the Jardin on Wednesday nights and get your Tamales and Atole on the spot!  Juan, Lupita and Judith have set up a small stand and will also be happy to make you a special batch if you want to host your own Dia de La Candelaria Fiesta!

Remember on Weekends they sell these and other Antojitos Mexicanos in front of the Kinder and the Tamale stand is replaced by someone else, a different Juan and Judith who own the Tamale cart you see going around town every afternoon.

For the ever growing amount of "basura" in our town new trucks and containers were delivered to La Manzanilla and Boca de Iguanas. A new garbage compacting truck will be in operation, as well as a second used one; our old truck was passed on to a different community, and a total of 3 new garbage containers were placed in strategic places around town and one in Boca.

New Basura Compacting Truck and Semi used Camion!

And don't forget today is the New Delegado Manuel Figueroa's first day in office!

       Bienvenidos!
